Yoga: Healing & Movement

Years ago, I came upon the quote: “Sometimes God calms the storm, and sometimes He lets the storm rage, and quiets His child.” As someone who has lived with anxiety for many years, that deeply resonated with me. It told me that the majority of my experiences can be be made better, or worse, by the power I hold within myself. I suspect that I’ve been drawn to careers in mental health and wellness due to my own raging storms.

As a yoga teacher of 5 years and a life-long dancer, my teachings are rooted in hatha yoga, ballet and contemporary dance, and plant-based holistic health practices. My yoga training comes from the heart-oriented, alignment-focused principles of Anusara yoga, which emphasizes the spiritual purpose of hatha yoga, reconnecting with our innate goodness, power and beauty, and expressing ourselves from that divine place.

My personal experiences, as well as my professional experience as a social worker and trauma counselor, give me the unique ability to assist my clients through the emotional challenges that may come with increased body awareness and vulnerability. My training and experience working with trauma survivors centered on the impact of trauma and the psyche; therefore, I focused on shifting perspectives, and facilitating emotional healing. At the time, I instinctively incorporated dance and movement into my work with my clients, because that was what I knew. In time, I learned that the mind-body connection was more than that: the emotional mind, the trauma mind, and the spirit mind all need to be addressed. The challenges that we are currently facing as individuals and as citizens of the world make me determined to nurture connections with each other, our communities, and the earth.

I offer private and group classes for my clients who need personalized attention due to injuries, illness, or personal preference. My style of teaching is inclusive, playful, and intimate, influenced by yoga philosophy, various music styles, and pranayama.

  • I've known Kenya for several years, and have always felt impressed by her kindness, support and caring for those around her. After a fall 2 years ago, I asked her if she could help me with some yoga moves to assist in my healing. She came to my home, brought her mat, and proceeded to help guide me through poses and breathing that would assist in my healing. I would highly recommend her to anyone that is looking for a teacher and a human being who is kind, loving and funny. Sometimes, you just gotta lighten the mood, and Kenya can guide you to your wellness with a lot of spirit.

  • I spend most of my time living in my head by routinely running around being many different things to many different people… Also, I often feel as if I have to wear many masks to shield myself as I go forward through the various storms of life… Kenya’s soulful and spirited yoga sessions reconnect me to my body, no matter how deep I’ve buried myself to go through this thing we called life. Kenya shares an invaluable gift that everybody should allow themselves to encounter… Thank you so much dear one…
